The numbers that matter

SEER2

How efficiently a system cools all season

Cooling output divided by the electricity it takes to produce, measured across a whole season rather than at one perfect moment. A 21 SEER2 unit does the same cooling as a 14 SEER2 unit on roughly a third less power.

Rule of thumb — 16+ pays back in hot climates

HSPF2

The same idea, for heating

The heating-season counterpart to SEER2. It matters more than SEER2 if your winters are long, and it is the number to compare when you are deciding between a heat pump and keeping a furnace.

Rule of thumb — 8.5+ for cold climates

Tonnage

Capacity, not weight

One ton equals 12,000 BTU per hour of heat moved. Oversizing is the most common mistake: a too-big system short-cycles, never runs long enough to pull humidity out, and wears itself out early.

Rule of thumb — 400–600 sq ft per ton

AFUE

How much fuel becomes heat

For gas equipment, the percentage of fuel converted to usable heat. A 96% furnace sends 4% up the flue; an old 80% unit sends a fifth of what you pay for outdoors.

Rule of thumb — 90%+ is condensing

UEF

Water heater efficiency

Uniform Energy Factor covers standby losses as well as heating. Heat pump water heaters land near 3.8, meaning they deliver nearly four units of heat per unit of electricity, versus about 0.95 for resistance.

Rule of thumb — 3.0+ means heat pump

Variable speed

Why inverters feel different

A single-stage system is either full blast or off. An inverter modulates, running long and low, which holds temperature within a degree, cuts noise, and dehumidifies far better at the same setpoint.

Rule of thumb — quieter and steadier, costs more
